Software Updates

Why updates are important

Unfortunately, there is no perfectly written software in the computer world. We can say that every software, no matter which company it is written by, has a vulnerability.

Thousands of hackers around the world are looking for vulnerabilities in the code of the programs we use on our devices every day, and when they find them, they try every way to exploit them.

As a result, we can face dozens of security risks every day, from the theft of personal and critical data due to outdated systems to very serious ransom threats. Having an antivirus program on our system alone is not enough to protect it. Antivirus programs detect and catch viruses that enter the system, but the virus can damage the system in the time it takes until it is detected and caught.

The goal should be to prevent malware from entering the system in the first place. The easiest way to do this is to keep all our software up-to-date. Every company launches its software by taking various tests and security measures, but this is never enough.

Security vulnerabilities detected over time are fixed by companies by releasing an update in a short time. Our operating systems are also included in this. As end users, we need to install these updates on our device without wasting time.

At Istanbul Bilgi University, all Windows-based computers included in the Bilgi Domain (opened with username and password) are automatically updated by the IT department.

As an end user, you do not need to take any action to update your office and lab computers, but you should regularly update your personal computers, phones, tablets and other PCs (such as MAC, Linux) that do not have Windows operating system.
